Buying a domain and buying web hosting solve different problems. A domain gives your business a recognisable address. Hosting provides the server space and services that make a website available. Your website is the actual collection of pages, images and software visitors interact with. Understanding these separate parts makes it easier to compare quotes, connect a new site and avoid cancelling something your business still needs.
You can register a domain before you have a website. You can also build a website before connecting its final domain. For a public business website at your own address, you normally bring both together. Professional email adds another service to consider, even when it is supplied alongside hosting.
The address, the premises and the contents
Think of a physical shop. Its street address tells customers where to go, the premises provide somewhere to operate, and the shelves, signs and stock make it useful. A domain resembles the address, hosting resembles the premises, and the website resembles what you put inside. The analogy is helpful, although internet services are more flexible: a domain can direct different services to different providers.
For example, your website could run on one hosting account while a separate provider handles your mailboxes. You do not need to move both just because you change one. Before buying or moving anything, write down which company currently manages the domain registration, DNS, website hosting and email. One company might handle all four, but they remain distinct responsibilities.
What a domain name does
A domain is a name such as example.co.za. Registration gives you the right to use that name for its registration period, subject to the applicable rules and continuing renewals. It does not automatically create web pages or a mailbox. The part after the name, such as .co.za or .com, is the extension; different extensions have their own prices and rules.
Choose a name that customers can remember, spell and recognise as your business. Check its availability before printing it on packaging or signage. An availability result is not a reservation: registration still needs to complete successfully. Keep the registration account under your control and maintain an accessible contact address so that you receive renewal and account notices.

A simplified shop analogy: a domain is the address, hosting provides the premises, and the website supplies the contents. They are separate parts of the budget.
What web hosting provides
Hosting makes the website's files and, where required, its database available through a server. The account may also provide email, SSL management, backups and tools for managing domains. What is included depends on the service. Check storage, resource allowances, backup arrangements and support rather than comparing only the headline monthly amount.
A simple information website and a busy shop place different demands on their hosting. Images use storage and transfer capacity; plugins and database activity use processing resources. Hosting several sites in one account does not create a separate resource allowance for each. Their combined activity shares the account's available resources and remains subject to fair use.

What the website itself contains
Your website includes its text, photographs, navigation, page layouts and features. Website software provides a way to assemble and maintain those pieces. This is why hosting being ready does not mean your business website is finished. Someone still needs to write the service descriptions, choose images, create pages and test the result. A store also needs product details, payments and delivery settings. Decide who will do that work and who will maintain it after launch.

How DNS connects the pieces
DNS is the system that helps direct requests for your domain to the relevant service. Different records have different jobs. Website records direct visitors towards the website host. MX records identify the servers responsible for receiving email. Other records can verify ownership or support email authentication. They are related to the same domain but do not all point to the same place.
Changing nameservers changes which DNS service is authoritative. Before doing that, ensure the required records exist at the destination DNS provider. Otherwise a website might start working while email stops, or an existing verification record may disappear. If only the website is moving, ask whether changing the website records is sufficient instead of replacing the entire DNS arrangement.
DNS answers can be cached. A saved change may therefore reach different visitors at different times. Cloudflare's DNS explanation provides more background. When unsure, provide your host with the intended result and current provider details before editing records at random.
Your .co.za domain can direct the website and professional email to different providers. DNS connects them; it does not itself store the pages or mailboxes.
Where professional email fits
An address such as hello@example.co.za uses your domain, but it also needs an email service. Creating the address in a website contact form is not the same as creating its mailbox. You need a mailbox or appropriate routing arrangement, working DNS and the correct settings in your mail application.

Website hosting can change while that email service remains in place, provided the required DNS records are preserved. Existing messages may need a separate migration if the email provider changes too.
Test both sending and receiving after email changes. Also submit a real enquiry through the website's contact form: that tests a different route from sending a message through your mail application. A form displaying a success message alone does not prove that the destination inbox received the enquiry.

Use this table when reading a quote. If a package says it includes hosting, ask whether domain registration and email are included as well. If it includes a builder, ask who supplies the text and images. A useful quote should make those boundaries clear enough that you can compare the total work and cost.
The domain supplies the identity. A working mailbox also needs an email service, correct DNS and device settings. Example address only.
Common situations and the next step
You have a domain but no website. Keep the domain active, plan the required pages, and choose hosting and a builder. You can connect the domain when the new site is ready. There is no need to register another name merely because the current one is held elsewhere.
You have a website but want new hosting. Plan a copy of the files, database and any email being moved. Test the destination before changing DNS. A domain transfer is a separate administrative process; see the hosting migration guide before cancelling the old account.
You only need professional email for now. Confirm an appropriate email service and domain arrangement. You can add a website later, while continuing to protect the domain renewal and mailbox access. Do not assume that cancelling unused website hosting is safe if it also contains the mailboxes you use every day.
Keep a simple ownership record
- Record the domain registrar, renewal date and account contact.
- Record the DNS provider and who may approve changes.
- Record the website host, account holder and backup location.
- Record the email provider and the mailboxes that matter to the business.
- Keep recovery information securely and review access when staff or suppliers change.
This small record is often more useful than memorising technical terms. It tells you who to contact, what to renew and which services a proposed change might affect. Once those relationships are clear, you can choose a hosting starting point with a much better understanding of what you are paying for.
